Abstract

The article rescues an episode from Brazilian forensic history in 1942, narrating the conviction of greengrocer Augusto Pereira by the National Security Court for selling goods above the official price table. The author demonstrates how the lawsuit was brought by the Court's president himself, Minister Barros Barreto, who was a customer of the greengrocer, and how the accusation was based on a false purchase attributed to his orderly, with the aim of coercing the defense lawyer. He concludes that the case reveals the civic and professional courage of Sobral Pinto, who, despite the conviction and the slanderous letter from the coerced client, fought against the arrogance of power and saw the court recognize, in its judgment, the falsity of the infraction and seizure records.
