Abstract

The text examines the social misunderstanding surrounding the figure of the criminal lawyer, especially when defending defendants hated by public opinion. Using a historical and legal-dogmatic method, it reconstructs emblematic episodes, such as the Dreyfus and Demjanjuk cases, and the role of Brazilian lawyers in preventing judicial errors, in light of the right of defense enshrined in international instruments. It argues that the criminal lawyer's mission is to guarantee due process of law and nulla poena sine judicio, ensuring that the true client of the criminal lawyer is human freedom, including that of those who hostilize them, preventing anticipated convictions and irreparable injustices.
