A symbolic cartography of social representations
prolegomena to a postmodern conception of law

The text proposes a symbolic cartography of law, taking maps as a metaphor and analytical instrument to think about social representations and, in particular, law, in a postmodern key. It starts from the verification that several forms of legality circulate in society, and not only state law, and demonstrates that such forms resort to the cartographic mechanisms of scale, projection and symbolization to represent and distort reality, distinguishing local, national and world law, egocentric and geocentric projections and Homeric and biblical styles. Drawing on empirical research in Brazil, Portugal and Cape Verde, it concludes that the new sociological theory of law is dominated by the concepts of legal pluralism, interlegality and a new legal common sense.
