Abstract

The text examines juvenile delinquency based on the Special Courts of Childhood and Youth of São Paulo, taking the Court of Justice as a source of socio-economic data. It analyzes cases opened in March 1988, characterizing adolescents as to sex, age, schooling, color, family, birthplace and type of occurrence, and demonstrates that delinquents are few, yet violent, with a predominance of robberies and weapon carrying, and that they act in groups. It concludes that juvenile delinquency is not simplistically related to misery, but to social inequality, and proposes policies of education, professionalization, leisure and reinforcement of citizenship.
