Abstract

The author starts from the psychoanalytic theory of narcissism, distinguishing primary from secondary narcissism, to metaphorically interpret the behaviour of Brazilian elites, which have moved little from the state of imaginary completeness, without respect for the law or the public good, sustaining a State that neglects basic rights. It aims to demonstrate the dialectic between the narcissism of the elites and the infantilism of the masses, marked by clientelism and submission. It concludes that the abandonment of the paternalistic pact, aggravated by neoliberalism, generates widespread delinquency and that only the maturity of the masses will remove the narcissism of the elites.
