Abstract

The author reconstructs the proceedings of the so-called Sacopã crime, which took place in April 1952 in Rio de Janeiro, in which Lieutenant-Aviator Alberto Jorge Franco Bandeira was accused of the death of banker Afrânio Arsênio de Lemos, with a crime of passion motive. It aims to analyse the committal for trial, the debates in the Jury Court, the accusations by Emerson de Lima and Milton Sales, the defences by José Bonifácio and Romeiro Neto, the conviction to fifteen years' imprisonment and the appeal. The research relies on documentary sources and procedural transcripts. It concludes that the Criminal Chamber denied the appeal, confirming the conviction based on circumstantial evidence, without acquitting the defendant.
