Abstract

The article reproduces an interview granted by Nils Christie in 1997, on the occasion of the International Seminar on Penal Abolitionism, in which he exposes his position as a minimalist abolitionist. The exposition reconstructs his formulations on crime as construction, conflict as property subtracted from the parties by legal operators, the critique of the treatment ideology and the expansion of the penal system. The investigation examines the growth of the crime control industry, private prisons, electronic monitoring, mediation and decentralization. The text concludes by the need to shrink the penal system and preserve legal guarantees.
