Abstract

The lecture examines the role of the Military Police in relation to the other instances of social control, starting from the distinction between formal and informal instances. The exposition argues that Criminal Law is the last ratio and that the main problem lies in treating such instances as watertight compartments, a heritage of the Cartesian logic that dissociates the part from the whole. The investigation analyzes the selectivity of the penal system, the discretionary power of the police, and the stigmatization process. The conclusion states that criminality is a normal phenomenon, that its containment is a community task, and that the penal system reproduces the criminality it intends to fight, requiring dialogue among instances and respect for human dignity.
