Abstract

The article seeks an approximation between characteristics of urban life, such as population density and vulnerability to the fear of violence, and the means of information about the habitat. The exposition starts from São Paulo, whose immensity prevents a view of the whole, requiring mediators such as television, radio, and newspaper. The text analyzes the mass, the crowd, the visibility of inequalities, and the construction of stigmas, arguing that the media is not neutral, has owners, and presumes an average man. The investigation concludes that the media contributes to blaming the poor for violence, deepening prejudices, and warns of the danger to democracy.
