Penal humanism between past and present

This article examines penal humanism as both a legal legacy of Europe and a safeguard against punitive excess. Through contemporary images of institutional violence, the author denounces ongoing processes of penal dehumanization. He revisits the philosophical and cultural foundations of abolitionism, highlighting its rupture with tradition, religion, and retributivism. The article concludes that penal humanism remains vital for upholding human dignity in modern criminal justice systems.
