Abstract

Brazil's condemnation by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for the "extrajudicial execution" of twelve individuals by the Military Police of São Paulo state in 2002, in the so-called "Operation Castelinho," is something to be lamented. It is sad that it took more than two decades, and the involvement of the Brazilian Institute of Criminal Sciences, to recognize such a serious (and evident) violation of basic human rights - such as the right to life.
