This article addresses the role of criminology in and for criminal sciences. This tripartite work aims to draw some foundations over what critical criminology seeks and how it works inside this umbrella called criminal sciences. This was originally a lecture given by this author on the same theme here developed. Therefore, one draws on an anamnestic tool by recalling a notorious academic debate between criminology and criminal law, featured by Lola Aniyar de Castro and Eduardo Novoa Monreal, which took place in the 1980s. From the reflections provoked by such an episode, we put forward some basic foundations to build critical criminological knowledge, however, with no intention of closing the debate.
