Abolishing from within
the practices of the group “Prison, Expression, and Freedom” in the movement resisting Brazilian mass incarceration

The article analyzes the weakening of democracy in Brazil, highlighting the role of the judiciary in the rise of authoritarian tendencies. It argues that, although public institutions are formally functioning, episodes such as the impeachment of an elected president and the imprisonment of former presidents highlight a crisis in the democratic rule of law model. The text emphasizes the selectivity of the criminal justice system, which disproportionately impacts the poor and black population, and criticizes the application of punitive policies that prioritize incarceration over rehabilitation. In addition, it discusses the relationship between the justice system and the rise of authoritarianism, suggesting that judicial action has contributed to the erosion of democratic values in the country.
