Abstract

The article examines the transformations that have taken place in crime in the Lower Tocantins/Pará region, based on an analysis of the changes in criminal dynamics experienced in a black neighborhood in the municipality of Igarapé-Miri. To this end, it uses data collected during an undergraduate and master's research project, which identified that, in the early 2000s, the neighbourhood was characterized by a high number of homicides, then became marked by the entry of factions operating in its territory and, more recently, by the formation of an illegal drug trade. From the analysis of the material, we conclude that criminal dynamics have changed in the region and in the neighborhood as a result of young people being linked to illegal activities and their social status being stripped away through the combination of their racial and socio-economic characteristics.
