In seeking to highlight to the academic community the urgency of critically analyzing the new Legal Framework for Combating Organized Crime in Brazil, it is necessary to bear in mind the constellation of obtuse forces that hold sway over social—and, above all, punitive—control in the country. This leads us to reflect not only on the changes it promotes—which are, to a large extent, devoid of any constitutional scrutiny—but also on the political context that underpins them. Drawing on the roots that founded IBCCRIM, the memory of Carandiru resonates in the pages that follow. Going against the grain of history, the editorial reminds us of the importance of a debate that resists the normalization of violence and the corresponding legal framework ready to legitimize it politically.
