Culture appears in the 1988 Constitution in the same chapter as education and sport, revealing the affinity between these three areas as important tools for building a free, fair and supportive society.
But what is culture? We can say that someone is very cultured, like Mr Fachin, or that a certain person "doesn't have an ounce of culture". We can also divide culture into "erudite" and "popular", a strategy that was (and still is) widely used to diminish the cultural production of those who have always been outside the centres of power and whose contribution has often been erased from our country's history.
