The article addresses an important decision by the STJ that reduces the relevance of confessions: it made “informal confessions” illegal and prevented extrajudicial confessions from being used as evidence for criminal convictions. The decision is encouraging because it requires a more rigorous evidentiary standard, and is based on the profusion of police violence, which is more persistent in obtaining confessions, and which is still poorly repressed.
